A changing world and what this means for the LGBT Community and our Finances
In the last “Money Talks” column, we talked about the impact of Brexit and what effect this might have on the LGBT Community. After the surprise of Brexit, which went against most expectations, we now face a potentially even bigger challenge with another unexpected election, that of Donald Trump as U.S. President. Trump was elected with a very radical agenda and importantly, a Vice Presidential running mate in Mike Pence who has been very vocal against LGBT rights and developments. Indeed, Pence was said to have been opposed to funding for HIV projects, preferring to fund ‘gay conversion’ projects. Scary stuff!
More recently, we have seen another surprise, this time in France with the selection of right-wing politician François Fillonas the centre-right’s Presidential Candidate, and who is widely expected to eventually compete against the even further-right ‘Front National’ candidate, Marine Le Pen. The one thing these surprising results have in common is ‘anti-immigration’ as a result of a populist approach. Immigration is a critical issue for LGBT rights as without full legal rights for LGBT people, the ability to move with a life partner can be under threat, especially when Marriage Equality itself is more likely to come under attack.
