With people of all ages getting their daily dose of updates on social media, Assam Police is cleverly using its social media handles to connect with the public through witty and informative tweets
Social media has a deep-rooted impact on people. The power of the new influential tool of the 21st century was witnessed in the Middle East, where young protesters were mobilized in the streets in political opposition, smartphones in hand, which lead to a change in the political dynamics of countries like Tunisia, Egypt, etc. Significantly, if an association or organisation has to run successfully at this day and age, social media cannot be ignored. And, that is especially true in the case of dynamic departments like police. For police departments, social media is as valuable as it is for traditional brands and businesses. It helps humanize the force by allowing departments to connect and communicate with the general public, but more importantly, it provides a platform for officers to share information quickly and respond to tips from civilians. Assam Police has been very successful in doing both, in the last one year.
Building Presence Online
With the help of witty wordplay on Twitter and Facebook, Assam Police has been steadily winning the hearts of netizens. The official social media accounts have generated a lot of interest not only among people residing in the city, but has even caught the attention of Bollywood stars and other famous individuals across the country. Salik Khan, the creative consultant of Assam Police’s social media pages talking to Eclectic NorthEast shared, ‘We are using social media pages as a medium to reach out to the people. The end goal is to build their trust. From the engagement we have been receiving and the inputs that keep flowing in through these mediums, we are certainly inching towards that goal.’

MUSINGS OF A SOLDIER: TIT-BITS
People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance. The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
