One Batti At A Time!

Students of Jumupani Government Residential School will now be able to study till late at night, all thanks to the independent mini power system, which uses hydro and solar energy.

It is a sad fact that over 200 million people living in remote parts of India still do not have access to electricity. And a substantial portion of this population are small children. Unfortunately, the lack of electricity, massively impacts the educational, safety and aspirational needs of these children, who could grow up to become future leaders.

To help these young talents, a team at the Chair of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems at the Technical University of Munich collaborated with the Batti project, a flagship program of a Bangalore based NGO called ‘The Further and Beyond Foundation’, active in the field of rural electrification in Arunachal Pradesh over the past four years, to build and install small renewable off-grid systems that could potentially improve energy access to rural communities.

Harnessing Natural Energy

Jumupani is a remote village in the Lower Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh. Located 1.5 hours by foot from the nearest seasonal road, the village is home to 12 households and the Government Residential School. The school has more than 50 students who study up to grade 8. The students along with 10 staffmembers live at the school for 9 months a year. Interestingly enough, the school has never had access to grid electricity.
