What’s the secret to winning people over and being showered in admiration? Well, according to psychologist Dr. Cecilia D’Felice, it’s self-appreciation. Here are her top tips on how to get it.
1. Accept compliments
Too often, our automatic response to a compliment is to quickly dismiss it. So, ‘Those jeans look great on you’ is met with ‘Really? I feel likeI’m bursting out of them.’ Instead, think of each compliment as a gift – if your friend handed one over, you wouldn’t unwrap it and throw it on the floor. When you say thank you, focus on the compliment and view yourself through the eyes of the person who gave it. Next step, add to the compliment. ‘Thanks! I always feel good when I wear them!’
2. Give compliments
