In celebration of their platinum wedding anniversary, Len and Julie Ramirez explain how they still give each other butterflies.
Julie: We met in 1992 at a journalism conference in Albuquerque, N.M. He was a big TV news reporter in San Francisco. I was still in college at the University of Texas. Len was smart, and he had a great smile.
Len: All I remember was this young woman with a big head of hair, her face covered up by a camera. She was taking pictures incessantly. We started talking and, from that point on, I don’t think we ever separated.
J: Two years in, I moved to California to be with him. 1996 was the year of La Macarena—and our wedding!
L: It felt like the old saying: One and one doesn’t make two; one and one makes one.
J: We had two sons and a daughter in the next five years. I thought I was going to be 100 percent focused on my career, but I rewrote what I wanted for my future. I wanted to be home like my mom was for me.
