Aaron Pereira finds out exactly what it feels like to be both behind the wheel, and lounging at the back seat of the mightily luxurious Lexus LS 500.
I WAS FILLED WITH mixed feelings of excitement and fear, when I found out that I’d get to review the Lexus LS 500—easily the most expensive car I’ve driven, to date. The excitement stemmed from being able to test that car’s mettle, the fear from getting even a scratch on its metal. But, one of the main highlights about the review was that I get to test out both the engine’s raw power, as well as the experience of being chauffeured in it.
While the first LS was introduced by the premium brand as its flagship in 1989, there are still some similarities. For one, both models are standout feats of engineering for its time. One thing that isn’t the same however, is that the brand has taken a more bolder step in terms of design, and shows that the carmaker is evolving with the times. The Japanese manufacture also prides itself on the fact that the Lexus LS 500 delivers on six main aspects: Concept, Design, Performance, Features, Safety and Takumi—an artisanal philosophy.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
The first thing I notice when I get behind the wheel, is the feel of the steering. Enveloped in nappa leather, it is a joy to touch, and gives off a rightly elegant feel. In fact, most of the interiors use the material, so the texture is unquestionably luxurious.
A push of the button and the engine roars to life—there’s already a rush of adrenaline, and I’ve not even switched the drive mode to Sport S+. Before driving out of the parking lot, not being used to the dimensions of the new car, I decide to check my surroundings. This however is not done the conventional way, thanks to the superb features packed into the LS 500. All I needed to do was press a button, while in park, and I get an entire 360° view of the car via the panoramic view monitor on the front screen panel. I notice there is a culvert in the way, so I proceed with caution.
