This was the 4th one for me, and I was looking forward to it as always. The local club, Almeria Modelismo, decided some years ago not to do a traditional scale model show, with the requisite contest and vendors, but to go a different route altogether. The ever increasing popularity of the Clinic confirms without a doubt that they made the right decision. This year, there were eighteen separate workshops, each for a maximum of five modellers plus one monitor, who was in charge of that workshop. The workshops ranged from terrain building to various figure, armour, aircraft and Sci-Fi workshops, all focusing on different aspects for the weekend. This meant that you spent roughly 10-12 hours in the workshop you registered for (cost for the weekend was &euro;50, plus &euro;15 for the group lunch, if so desired). There is only space for a few vendors at the location, and a small display area for participants&rsquo; models, but then again, the Clinic is not open to the public - the modellers paid for the insights from their monitor, after all. I had the pleasure of working with David Parker this weekend, who demonstrated a range of ways in which to do weathering with acrylics. It&rsquo;s one thing to read about this in magazines or online, or even seeing a demo somewhere, but quite another to sit next to the man for extended explanations and applications of the techniques, while also getting tips on your own work, whether or not you were doing the same as he was, or working on a model that was going in a completely different direction. As we were in the south of Spain, there was ample time for lunch, where you could catch up with other attendees, followed by some down time, before picking up the tools once more. The enthusiastic atmosphere created by like-minded modellers really makes you want to keep going. However, if your concentration was flagging, it was very easy to take a walk around and look at all the other impressive modelling that&rsquo;s going on at the same time! I certainly walked away again with more knowledge than I had before, along with another great experience, and seeing friends I normally only connect with online. Looking forward to next year, when I hope to be up to doing one of the Sci-Fi figure workshops.T his May saw the 58th Shizuoka Hobby Show, and the 30th Annual Modellers Modeller&rsquo;s Club Exhibition.For those that have never been, the Shizuoka Show is a five-day show dedicated to scale modelling in Shizuoka, Japan, about an hour and a half away by train from Tokyo. Shizuoka is known in Japan as &lsquo;Plamo (Plastic Model) Town&rsquo; due to the fact the city traditionally hosted the headquarters of a number of manufacturers, including Tamiya and Hasegawa. 58 years ago several of the manufacturers came together to organise a trade event for the promotion of the industry and the hobby show was born.The first three days &ndash; Wednesday to Friday &ndash; are purely trade-only. Not all Japanese manufacturers exhibit, only those in the association which, at present, means 91 companies, including Tamiya, Hasegawa, FineMolds, Aoshima, Bandai, Asuka and Creos. Not all produce plastic. kits. Some are Radio Control, others publishers like Model Art and Armor Modelling, and some are distributors such as Creos (in addition to their own modelling business) and Beaver Corporation (the distribution company of Hobby Link Japan). Through the companies we see new products from their own catalogues and the distributors feature new releases from non-Japanese manufatcurers.On the Saturday and Sunday half the exhibition space is cleared to accommodate a massive modelling exhibition with over 400 model clubs, mostly from Japan, but with twelve model groups from overseas, including &lsquo;Team Euro&rsquo;, of which I was proud to be a part.The show attracts tens of thousands of visitors of all ages, including plenty of children,certainly more than I am used to in the UK!There is no competition at the show, but there is a &lsquo;flea market&rsquo; and the manufacturers also open sales to the public at the weekend.
