Having a baby is like a thrilling roller coaster ride with its crazed ups and downs, which leave the parents thrilled, scared, excited, laughing and crying!
For a long time, motherhood was projected as this perfect phase in life where a smiling baby and mother exist in a perfect home. The reality is a ‘tad’ different and thankfully with social media and real mommy bloggers blogging out there, all those unreal scenarios are getting busted. Alternately, the real challenges of motherhood are discussed with honesty, and some much-needed humour. So what really are these truths that a new mum must know about her new baby? We’ve compiled a list of a few things we hope new mums will find helpful:
1. NEW BABY WILL SLEEP A LOT, BUT NOT AT A STRETCH
‘Sleeping like a baby’ isn’t as amazing as it is made out to be. Babies don’t sleep restfully like adults. They twitch, have jerky movements and irregular breathing. Also they keep waking. Their stomachs cannot hold much food, and so they wake up from sleep for their feeds. In fact doctors say that if the baby does not wake up, one must wake up them for feed every three to four hours.
2. ABOUT POO
Many babies poo almost immediately after their feed, if not during! It is normal. Many mums have had to change baby diaper as they pooed mid feed and then resume feeding after clean up. Also, the first few poops are really gross! They can be dark/sticky/runny/pasty.. all well within the realm of normal. On the upside, new born baby poo doesn’t smell at all.
3. UMBILICAL CORD
It will shrink and shrivel up and fall off eventually. But be careful to not hurt it while it is on the baby. One has to be careful that the clip that the hospital puts on it doesn’t get pulled or entangled as that can hurt baby too. The clip is usually very large, so do request them to change it to a smaller one if possible.
4. TOP TIP - LEARN TO BURP YOUR BABY ASAP
