1 Lighting is Everything
Forget fancy cameras and flash settings. All you need to take beautiful baby photographs is natural light. Place your baby on a blanket in front of patio doors or a window. The most natural light source is the sun, but don’t have the sun blazing onto your baby as this will cause harsh shadows. Make a note of what time of day the sun shines through your different windows in the house and photograph your baby when the light is soft and warm.
2 Create a Backdrop
You’re not going to want sofa legs, the TV, or the kitchen table in the background. Raid your cupboards for a plain blanket or a sheet and drape it over a couple of chairs to form your backdrop.
3 Keep Baby Happy
Baby needs to be happy to result in great photos. Keep the room warm if taking nude shots (newborns are used to 30 degrees+ in mummy’s tummy). Stop when the baby needs a feed, a cuddle or a nappy change. If you want to photograph your baby sleeping, think about what times of day they usually sleep and play some white noise to help baby stay asleep for longer.
