LIFE IN THE SPOTLIGHT HASN’T CHANGED THE LEADING MAN
ALEX DIMITRIADES 'I'LL ALWAYS BE THE HEARTBREAK KID'

Starring opposite a young Claudia Karvan, Alex Dimitriades became a household name – and the crush of teenagers everywhere – in his debut film, The Heartbreak Kid, and its spin-off TV series, Heartbreak High.

Since then, Alex, now 47, has remained a fixture of the Australia film and television industry, earning rave reviews and a slew of awards for his work in high-profile productions such as the first season of Underbelly, The Slap and The Principle.

Still, the actor admits there’s no escaping his teen-sensation past – not that he’d ever want to.

“We’re all very proud to have been part of a series that was not only daring and brave during its heyday, but one which also stands up today. It’s found a whole new audience,” Alex tells New Idea. “Timeless themes and solid character performances age well, and that’s a credit to the writers.”

Alex adds that “a lot” of it comes down to the work of dramaturge, Nico Lathouris, who played his dad on Heartbreak High. Nico also mentored him on The Heartbreak Kid.
