Most of us feel we know the effects of poor dental hygiene (hello, toothaches, bleeding gums and bad breath!), but you mightn’t be aware just how vast the consequences of poor oral health are.

“When you think of dentists, you generally think of teeth and gums, so understanding that oral wellness contributes to general wellness isn’t usually top of mind,” says Dr Fred Calavassy, clinical advisory board chair and clinical director at Maven Dental Group.

The good news? By keeping up good hygiene practices and regular dental check-ups, Dr Calavassy says dental diseases can be prevented.
