Left For Dead... By Her Best Friend!

After a painful divorce, Tara Loo decided it was time to take a break from men, but she was on Facebook one day when a familiar, friendly face sent her a friend request.

Tara knew John Sharkey well – they’d been best friends in high school – so she thought there would be no harm in clicking accept … but she was so wrong.

It was the summer of 2009 when Tara reconnected with John, after her marriage of six years had broken down. They’d been part of the same group growing up in Colorado Springs, in the US, and she was surprised, but happy, to see John had sent her a friend request. Focused on her girls, Maddison, then 8, and Isabelle, 5, Tara tells New Idea that she wasn’t looking for love.

“John and I got on really well,” she says. “But when he asked me out I was hesitant.”

Tara was still dealing with her divorce but she remembered him as a good guy so the pair picked up where they left off.

Things were going so well, a month later, John had moved in with Tara and her girls.

“I know it sounds fast but I thought I knew John,” Tara admits.

But slowly, John began to show a side of him that Tara had never seen. He became obsessive and would question Tara when she went out with her friends.

Eventually, his jealousy meant Tara was walking on eggshells to keep him happy.

But when John started accusing her of cheating and spreading rumours about her having a drinking problem, Tara knew she had to leave him – her best friend wasn’t the man she’d once known.
