Friluftsliv (pronounced free-loofts-liv) directly translates to “open-air life” in Norwegian and describes the desire to spend time outdoors and be close to nature. Beyond its definition, the word embodies a philosophy and way of life deeply rooted in Scandinavian culture. Similar to the popular concept of hygge, which encompasses the feeling of cosiness, comfort and contentment, friluftsliv uplifts spirits and is beneficial for one’s well-being. It is a broad expression that can mean anything from a jog around a park and a picnic in your backyard to going on a leisurely hike and scaling mountains.
In today’s circumstances, incorporating friluftsliv into our lives is especially helpful for our physical and mental health. And with travel put on hold, it is all the more important to foster a connection with nature in everyday life – starting at home.
