NICOLAI BERGMANN shares with Grace Ma his belief in articulating dreams to make them come true
In the grand ballroom of Four Seasons Hotel Singapore, Nicolai Bergmann shares his life story while he places stalk after stalk of flowers and leaves into his left hand until he is left grasping a giant bouquet measuring nearly 40cm in diameter and filled with about a hundred stalks of blooms such as roses, hydrangeas and peonies. Then, in one deft move, he wraps a piece of twine around the bunch with his right hand, knots it and places the final masterpiece on the table. The audience gasps in wonder: The bouquet stands perfectly shaped without unravelling.
The arresting arrangement is the perfect visual metaphor for the Danish floral artist, who has been based in Tokyo for the past 20 years. He has gained a cult following in Japan with his floral creations that successfully marry a clean Scandi aesthetic with the poetic elegance of Japanese ikebana.
