DIOR
Archival photos of Josephine Baker dressed in Dior couture while performing in New York circa 1951, served as a storyboard for Maria Grazia Chiuri's '20s-inspired collection. The African-American singer-dancer gained renown as a successful showgirl, but rather than narrowing the focus on the glitzy world of burlesque costumes, Chiuri perused photographs of the entertainer in off-duty day looks and wartime uniforms. Intuitively picking the pared-down, daily-dressing route, she kept to an easy, elongated silhouette that nipped low in the waist and ended at the shin. Channelling Monsieur Christian Dior's legendary New Look, everyday suits were evidently softer and youthfully elegant, while heavily beaded dresses exuded discreet glamour.
