STRAIGHT

If you’re blow-drying…

“As soon as you’re out of the shower, twist your hair up in a towel, which creates lift,” says Rebekah Forecast of the Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in New York City, who is Allison Williams’s hairstylist. Leave the towel on for as long as possible, then take it off and mist a thickening spray, such as Living Proof Texture Mist ($27, livingproof.com), all over. “Blow-dry with a paddle brush, using it to continually whisk up your hair at the roots for fullness.”

If you’re air-drying…

For a lush effect, spray the same texturizing product throughout damp hair, then part your style on the opposite side of where you normally do. “Once it’s dry, flip hair back to its normal part, and it’ll have natural volume,” says Forecast.

If you’re not shampooing…

Dry shampoo can inject some oomph back. “Part your hair in the center, then divide each side into two or three sections,” says Los Angeles hairstylist Eric Sebbag. “Lift up each section and spray the roots, then toss your head over and spritz the nape of your neck for an extra kick of body.” Try Dove Refresh + Care Fresh & Floral Dry Shampoo.

WAVY OR CURLY

If you’re blow-drying…

Rake a palmful of wave enhancing mousse such as Suave Captivating Curls Mousse ($3, at drugstores) into damp hair, then try this scaled-back blowout from hairstylist Marcus Francis, who works with Julianne Moore. “Blow-dry the front and top sections of your curls with a round brush, then dry the rest with a diffuser while twisting the curls around your fingers.”
