No Holds Barred With Words
SOCIETY|April 2018

Author Paro Anand is a gutsy writer who works towards presenting a mirror of society to children and young adults through literature. She talks to Society about her writings and about being a daredevil.

No Holds Barred With Words

She has been described as ‘fearless’, her books being banned from schools for having ‘inappropriate’ and ‘improper’ content. But author Paro Anand continues to do what she believes in–-making children and young adults aware of what’s going on around them through her writing.

Her books for children and young adults tackle complex issues like violence, communal hatred, sexual abuse, failure, etc. Clearly, the author is breaking barriers by moving away from the standard myths and fairy tales that are mostly fed to the targeted age group. She endorses realism. Her recent work is a graphic novel for young adults called 2, which she has co-authored with Swedish author Örjan Persson. And just like its authors, the novel brings together an Indian boy Ganga and a Swedish girl Helga as the protagonists of the story revolving around bullying and finding strength in one’s self.
