It&rsquo;s a funny old game, football. I should know, I was once a pro &ndash; and played against Brazil for Wales in 1997. I also played in the Premier League in 1999 for Southampton. But back then, tech in the sport was extremely limited &ndash; about as rare as a Gary Lineker booking, you could say. A GAME OF TWO HALVES Yes, there wasn&rsquo;t much in the way of technology back then. In my last year at Southampton they had just recruited a full-time Sports Scientist so it was something that they were just starting to look into. We did &lsquo;plyometric training&rsquo; but this wasn&rsquo;t really using technology. I think in the professional game nowadays, the margins between success and failure are tiny. I&rsquo;m certain that tech can improve the performance and efficiency of a player by that small but significant percentage that can make all of the difference. When I see all of the tech that is available nowadays I&rsquo;m certain that it could have improved my game. The way players strike a ball nowadays is completely different to in the past (think of Ronaldo and Gareth Bale&rsquo;s technique taking free-kicks). Through analysing how the ball will travel after striking it in different places can make those marginal differences. And through tech I&rsquo;m sure I could have avoided certain injuries as well &ndash; as well as the one that ultimately retired me from the game. Nowadays, players are monitored not only in games but also in training and player&rsquo;s individual needs are taken into account. Technology also provides players with a lot of information about the players that they will be lining up against at the weekend and they can study hours of footage of an opponent to see where their strengths and weaknesses are. So, the first piece of modern tech I explored is the Adidas miCoach smart ball. Although released a couple of years ago, this still represents the future of football tech. A FIFA-approved ball that plays and feels like any other top ball, the miCoach houses something different under its panels. It&rsquo;s a smart ball that has an integrated sensor nestled inside that detects speed, spin, strike and flight path data and then instantly shows that data on your smartphone via an app.From this I was able to gauge exactly where I was kicking the ball and how much power I was getting. For fine-tuning free kicks it&rsquo;s perfect - you can really analyse your dead ball skills. The app is dead simple to use and you get a prompt when to kick, followed by your results almost immediately. Players are tracked not just by coaches but also by television - you just have to turn on a sports channel and you&rsquo;ll get a vast array of data about players; how many miles they&rsquo;ve run in a game, a heatmap of the area covered and more. When I was a pro this wasn&rsquo;t commonplace. But thanks to the Playertek Pod, anyone &ndash; even Sunday league-ers &ndash; can get these kind of stats.How? Well, the Playertek Pod is an ingenious bit of kit. Essentially a GPS tracker, but so much more, the Playertek Pod is holstered via &ndash; what I&rsquo;d call &ndash; a sports bra. You pop it in a dedicated sleeve on your back and it tracks pretty much everything you do. So when I had it on during a game I could see what part of the pitch I&rsquo;d covered, my average speed and everything down to how many calories I&rsquo;d burnt.After your training session or game, it&rsquo;s simply a matter of syncing your Playertek Pod with the web app - although there&rsquo;s also an iOS and Android app available as well. Data-wise, I can see exactly what part of the pitch I&rsquo;ve covered - and it&rsquo;s really interesting; being a winger I can see that I stray occasionally. I can also see that I&rsquo;ve run a total of five miles in the game - which is around average for a professional footballer. Still, I need to step that up. At around ₹16,000 and subscription charges per month it may seem a bit pricey, but in my opinion it&rsquo;s worth it to get the analysis of your game - especially considering you can compare your heatmap with professional footballers in the Premier League. And you can also see when your game peaks and dips. Zepp has been a bit of pioneer of sports trackers, with its fantastic golf tracker (and footballers love a bit of golf). This little bit of wizardry straps into a pouch under your sock and gives you feedback on distance, kicks, kick speed, sprints and max sprint speed - which you can analyse via the companion app. Also, the Zepp Soccer app enables you to capture highlights of your game. Sure, you&rsquo;ll need someone to film you from the sidelines, but then you can get an automatic highlight reel. If everyone on your five-a-side team (for example) has a Zepp Soccer, you can combine data and get team stats. It&rsquo;s football for geeks - and it&rsquo;s a great bonding exercise chatting and looking over the data from the last game. I also had an Adidas miCoach Speed Cell strapped to my boots - which measures speed, distance covered and more.BOOT IT UP In my Premier League days, it wasn&rsquo;t quite harsh leather boots, but boot tech has improved gigantically since I was running around for Southampton, Swindon and Wales. Although the Adidas Tango Purecontrol astro boots were tough to get on at first, they provided a load of support and gave excellent feedback. They&rsquo;re ultra-light and super-comfortable. Similarly, the New Balance New Balance Visaro Pro boots felt light on my feet and gave me an amazing amount of feedback with dead ball striking.So what have I accomplished? I now know my game better than ever before. I know my speed and where on the pitch I cover. It&rsquo;s enlightening to see, and gather my data. I&rsquo;ll be telling all of my five-a-side team mates to get all of this kit so we can geek out post-match.
