Hot Hotels

LEGENDARY

Happy 90th birthday to the Fullerton Building! Before its current five-star inhabitant, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore (www.fullertonhotels.com), opened in 2001, it was home to many important colonial institutions such as the General Post Office and Governor’s office, and was even where the Singapore Stone – a large sandstone slab with ancient inscriptions dating back at least 800 years – was discovered almost two centuries ago. Singapore’s oldest hotel, the Raffles Singapore (www.raffles. com/singapore), has been offering high-end hospitality since 1887, and is the originator of the Singapore Sling. Currently, the hotel is under restoration till end-2018, but you can sample its famous cocktail at a pop-up Long Bar at 3 Seah St, next to the hotel’s gift shop.

LATEST

Fast forward to today, and robots and “smart” technology rule at trendy hotels. Book a stay at the Central Business District’s M Social (www. millenniumhotels.com) and expect Aura – a lift-riding, autonomous robot – to deliver toiletries, extra towels and even bottled water straight to your room. Meanwhile, on Orchard Road, YOTEL Singapore (www.yotel.com) has a fully automated check-in and -out system, and rooms that feature “smart” lights, TVs and beds, which transform into sofas so you can watch TV in style.
