This young scientist believes that everyone deserves the chance to go beyond what they can do
As one of the few Malaysians who have ventured successfully into the field of aeronautics, scientist Dr Wan Wardatul Amani Wan Salim offers hope to millions of women who aspire to do well in a male dominated sphere. Her experiences have taught her that in order to make an impact, one must be brave enough to go against what is accepted as the norm. “Others can inspire you but you shape your own path,” says the 39-year-old. “Don’t let others clip your wings. Surround yourself with positive people.”
While pursuing a PhD in biomedical engineering in the US, her supervisor noted her gift for “making things function” and encouraged her to get involved in research work. She ended up leading several important NASA projects and in the process, becoming the first Malaysian to launch a nanosatellite into space! International accolades followed, including the Thora Halstead Young Investigator’s Award for contributions to gravitational and space research.
Here she speaks about the challenges she faces as a scientist and nurturing the younger generation to excel in their chosen fields.
