With more than 800 fabulous buildings to explore, Scotland’s Doors Open Day is back

Hiding within the glorious granite walls of Aberdeen’s neo-Gothic Town House are many timeless treasures.

“From the UNESCO recognised city archives, to the splendour of the Bon Accord room – with its beautiful 18th century lead crystal chandeliers – people will be able to explore so many different parts of this building,” says Christopher Croly, from the University of Aberdeen and the Doors Open Days coordinator for Aberdeen City.

Designed by prolific Scottish architects, Peddie and Kinnear, this Town House was a symbol of changing times. Initial plans were to craft the building out of sandstone but after a boom in the granite industry, which characterises the city, Kemnay stone was used instead. The result was a centrepiece that decked the old burgh with the wealth of the 19th century, and an iconic tower that continues to be a landmark in the city.

Visit on September 9 and 10 and learn about some newly-discovered, fascinating Aberdeen history at a special local history fair being held in in the grand Town and County Hall.

Dundee The McManus Art Gallery and Museum September 16-17 (https://diadundee.wordpress.com/)

Dundee has played a historical role in Scottish art, and the diversity of the city’s collection reflects its continued links with the art scene. The McManus Art Gallery and Museum has always offered free entry, and recent revamping has modernised the displays.

September 16 and 17 are a rare opportunity to see “Behind the Art Store Door” at the city’s entire art collection and meet the curators.
