Legend Has It
Wildside Magazine|Spring 2017

What does the ideal leisure destination look like? It should be family friendly, have a spa, golf course, picture perfect wedding venue, world class conference facilities, varying accommodation options, game viewing, a range of dining options, swimming pools and various other leisure activities; Legend has it all and more.

Legend Has It

In 1994 Peet and Mart Cilliers and Roy Tucker bought 400ha of land on Entabeni’s upper escarpment which quickly became their new preferred holiday destination. Between 1994 and 1999 they developed the land into a private game reserve, Lakeside Dam was built, an additional 2400ha of land was purchased, Ravineside Lodge opened, and in 1999 the Legend Hospitality Group was established. Their mission; to introduce both South African and international travellers to our country’s rich diversity, breathtaking scenery and abundant natural wildlife.

Entabeni Safari Conservancy is situated in the World Heritage, Waterberg biosphere. This 22000ha, Big 5 Conservancy is malaria free and offers guests the opportunity to experience a unique blend of the African wilderness.

A two and a half to three and a half hour drive north of Johannesburg, depending on the traffic and any roadworks, the lower escarpment area of Entabeni comprises mainly of “sandveld” vegetation which provides the ideal habitat for lion and other predators. During our stay, we were privileged to witness these “kings of the jungle” lazing around in the winter sun close to the dam. One of the youngsters had a mischievous look on his face as he watched some cormorant chicks who were squawking loudly at their mom, hoping, of course, to grab a quick snack if one of them fell out of the nest.

Lower Escarpment

Two lodges have been developed in the lower escarpment region of Entabeni. Hanglip Mountain Lodge is an intimate and luxurious ten suite lodge where the romance of Africa is brought alive with mosquito nets draped over four poster beds, beautifully appointed en-suite bathrooms and a private sun deck that rewards guests with spectacular views across the wetlands.
