When it comes right down to it, parenting is all about feeding. Yes, we are charged with the awesome and awe-inspiring responsibility of ensuring their spiritual, intellectual and emotional growth and development, and so on and so on. But face it. Mostly, you are tossing calories into the kids and watching those calories transform into flesh and bone and synapses.
A small baby is a very efficient mechanism for turning breast milk into human. In order to effect this remarkable change, the baby has to suck milk from you pretty much all day. You feed a baby roughly every two hours. It takes the best part of an hour to feed the baby, which then needs a nappy change and a brief restorative nap (that’s your ‘me time’ right there, by the way, ha ha ha) after which it wakes up ravenous, and the cycle begins again.
