As a growing number of couples step up to renew their vows, people are splashing out and spending thousands on their celebrations. So what drives a couple to retie the knot? Milestone anniversaries are the main reason, but for many, it’s because they didn’t have their dream wedding first time around. With Alec Baldwin, Salma Hayek, Victoria Beckham and Jamie Oliver queueing up to share their love with the world, we find out why these three couples took the plunge again...
‘THIRTY-SIX YEARS TOGETHER AND WE’RE STILL LAUGHING!’
Sue, 57, is an investigator in a bank, and Steve Conneely, 59, is a driver. They travelled to Las Vegas for a ceremony at the Elvis-themed Graceland Wedding Chapel.
“Steve and I met when I was 20 and working at our local bar, where he was the resident DJ. Steve was (and still is) the most handsome man I have ever set eyes on, and he had all the chat. We started dating at the end of summer in 1982, and three months later we were engaged. Back then you didn’t wait around to tie the knot once you’d found the one.
We were saving to go away when Steve (romantic that he is) asked if we should just forget about the trip and get married instead. He didn’t have to ask me twice – no one had ever made me smile as much as he did!
The following September, we were married in front of 40 of our closest friends and family. The church was beautiful – everything we’d both imagined. Afterwards, we held the reception buffet at my mom and dad’s house, and booked a bar for an evening party.
