Take A New Stance!
Airgun World|January 2017

Naylor ball is determined to improve his standing technique - by changing it completely.

Take A New Stance!

My training’s going really well, lately, and I’m determined to maintain the momentum, so I thought I’d attack what I regard as my weakest link. I’m talking about shooting from the standing position, and I think that particular stance will be most shooters’ area of greatest weakness.

Thinking back over my training, and it seems as though I’ve been doing this for years now, I realise that I’ve done my absolute best to avoid shooting from the standing position, unless it was absolutely necessary. I still think that’s a good policy, especially in the hunting field, because if there’s a more reliable and accurate way of doing something, I think I should be doing it.

UNAVOIDABLE

The problem is, shooting from standing is unavoidable sometimes; if the ground cover is high, or if there’s a barrier between me and my target, or, as I recently discovered during a lamping trip with the editor, if dropping to my knee lowers my gun-mounted lamp and casts long shadows that obscure the rabbit I was going for. The fact is, there will be times when a standing shot is the only one available, and I’ll either have to decline all such shots, or get a whole lot better at them. I’m going for the second option, and I’m starting from the ground up.
