Team India is still learning the basics of Test cricket after the retirement of its leading stars. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni have retired while there is no place for veterans like Zaheer Khan, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh in the team. Virat Kohli, the best Indian batsman across formats, is the new guiding force behind the bunch of young cricketers. He recently won his first Test as Indian captain, after drawing and losing two Tests each, when India defeated Sri Lanka by 278 runs in the second match of the series. His approach towards captaincy has been positive since his first Test as captain against Australia before the World Cup, but he has been criticized by many for not backing up his aggressive style with results. However with this win, I feel Virat has finally justified his aggressive captaincy. Anyone who has watched Virat Kohli as captain in the ODIs won&rsquo;t be surprised by his tactics and strategies. The Indian team have won 14 out of 17 ODIs he has led in international cricket. The three matches which the Indian team lost under his leadership were because of the depleted side. He has been truly inspirational in his captaincy. Virat has shown a willingness to back players and put individuals ahead of him in the batting order. He has promoted Ambati Rayudu to number 3 position in the batting order in some of the series which shows that Virat is ready to sacrifice his favorite position in order to achieve positive results. However, there was a common belief that his real examination was always going to be in the longest format of the game. He made his captaincy debut against Australia at Adelaide and there were quite a few indications about what we are going to see in the near future. Right from the team selection, where he picked up Karn Sharma ahead of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to backing up of his bowlers, Virat was on the front foot. His second Test as captain came in the fourth and final Test against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground. MS Dhoni hung up his boots after losing the third Test which forced selectors to appoint Virat as the next Indian skipper. His attacking brand of captaincy once again came to fore when he dropped out of form Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara and asked KL Rahul to open the innings. The first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle was under Team India&rsquo;s grip but a blinder of an inning from Dinesh Chandimal and stunning bowling display from Rangana Herath and Tharindu Kaushal spoiled Virat&rsquo;s plan of registering his first win as captain. India lost the match by 63 runs despite leading in most of the sessions. This was the time when Virat&rsquo;s critics started popping up uncomfortable questions for him. It was stated that although he is scoring runs, his captaincy seems to be out of sorts. The champions are made up of steel and they have a habit of rising from the ashes. Virat Kohli&rsquo;s self-esteem was on the line and he was not ready to give up after few unfavorable results. The second Test match of the series was played at P Sara Stadium, Colombo, where Kohli had a point to prove. Springing another surprise, the&nbsp;Indian captain promoted Ajinkya Rahane to number three position but this move failed miserably in the first innings. Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian captain, blasted this sudden change of plan from the current skipper. &ldquo;It (Rahane batting at No. 3) was sacrificing a good man, a man who will take everything that the team dishes out at him.<img src="http://magarticles.magzter.com/articles/119/122559/581a609f66c6a/1478123359615.jpg"" owidth=727 oheight=1103" style="height:910px; width:600px" />He is one of those nice guys who can be shoved around. He has been pushed at No. 3 even though he had success batting at No. 5,&rdquo; he said. The criticism could have hurt Virat&rsquo;s confidence but like a true champion he was unmoved. His boys managed to achieve a decent lead in the first innings of the match. Ajinkya Rahane was again sent to&nbsp;bat at the same position, which showed the captain&rsquo;s confidence in his abilities. The right hand batsman went on to score a century which helped India in setting up a target of 413-run. Kohli then backed his bowlers and stuck to his plans. His change of bowlers had a method attached to it. Umesh Yadav was asked to bowl fast while Amit Mishra was used purely as a wicket taking option. Ashwin and Ishant were given responsibility of going for the kill. The move worked wonderfully and Virat finally registered a win as captain. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s pretty satisfying especially knowing we came pretty close twice before at Adelaide and Galle. We&rsquo;ve spoken about that, if you win six sessions in a game, you expect your side to win the game. I think the result at Galle hurt us in that way. It&rsquo;s a commendable effort by all the boys, to regroup so well after the loss (at Galle) like that, knowing that we should have won the game. I think its tremendous effort to get yourself together, put yourself in and play the same way again. To capitalize and improve on the same situation that we failed to in the first Test shows that the guys are keen to improve and hungry to win. As a captain that is very satisfying, &ldquo;he stated. The Kohli era has officially begun and we hope it continues in the same fashion. He will risk a loss to get a win in a Test match. It is not often that you see India winning a Test overseas but Virat Kohli&rsquo;s penchant for taking calculated risks could buck that trend, feels Australian great Adam Gilchrist. &ldquo;I think his (Kohli) natural attacking style will help the team take on new frontiers (winning overseas and conquering final frontiers). He looks like the sort of guy who is prepared to take risks, certainly in his individual play,&rdquo; Gilchrist said. &ldquo;With time, he will learn more about his style of leadership &mdash; whether he is prepared to take the risks in winning or losing a match.
