Return Of The Hogs?
Every few years, the second coming of the famed Hogs that led Washington to three Super Bowl championships is mentioned. And every few years, the talk quickly quiets.
But the comparison’s back again with maybe the best Redskins quintet since nine players comprised the club during the Super Bowl era of 1983-81. Left tackle and team captain Trent Williams has often mentioned the Hogs hoping it would inspire linemates to improve.
Williams hosted an offensive linemen camp in July in his Houston hometown, saying it was no different than other units who work out informally over the offseason. But, the players wore T-shirts saying, “Hogs 2.0”
“I tagged a 2.0 onto it because I didn’t want people to think we were trying to emulate the Hogs and say we had as much success or we were as good as they were,” Williams told the Washington Post. “But we wanted to pay homage to them and let them know that’s what we’re chasing. We’re chasing their greatness, and we acknowledge that they were great, and we acknowledge we want to be just like them — if not better.”
Better would be a bit of a long shot. Guard Russ Grimm is now a hall-of-famer. Tackle Joe Jacoby has come close to Canton, even making the final 10 before failing to garner enough votes.
