As the world turns a new leaf and embraces cruelty-free products, why should the automobile industry be any exception? Countless studies and surveys have proven how damaging some leather markets have been, not only to the animals they exploit but also to the ecosystems that they pollute. Sustainability doesn’t only mean cleaner automobiles that emit less carbon, but also those that are more wholly involved in bringing about an collective good.
Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and more recently Tesla, have opted to create car interiors that break away from the standard luxury practices of sheathing their seats and surfaces with leather.
Instead, they are using more responsibly-sourced materials to achieve the same comfort and richness that leather would offer.
Will this adversely effect all leather businesses? Of course, it will. Will luxury car owners see reason in the move? Probably. Will this trend catch on and inspire more brands to adopt non-animal products? Only time will tell.
Among those leading the change in the luxury car segment are brands that have consciously and audibly expressed their allegiance with the Earth and have pledge to create a sustainable ecosystem not just on paper, but also in practice.
