DAY 1
CHANDIGARH -KALPA (160km)
I REACHED KALPA on the fifth day from Chennai, motoring 3,500km through Belagavi, Surat, Jodhpur and Chandigarh. Though the drive to Kalpa had provided picture postcard moments along the way, Reckong Peo, the capital of Kinnaur district, was distressingly overcrowded. The pristine area is succumbing to the evils of tourism such as wanton construction and irresponsible driving.
The suicide point is where most tourists go in Kalpa. A kind man, who offered me a lift to the point, told me stories of how people fling themselves over the sheer drop of 1,000 feet. About 2km beyond the suicide point is Roghi Village, the last village on the Indian side. People come to Roghi to view the Kinnaur Kailash range. The village abounds in apple and apricot orchards and chilgoza trees.
DAY 2
KALPA-SANGLACHITKUL (160km)
