As the story is most commonly told, the iconic Gretsch White Falcon was never meant to be built as a regular production model. Gretsch guitar guru Jimmie Webster took a cue from the car industry, building the first Falcon for the 1954 NAMM show like the high-concept ‘cars of tomorrow’ coming from Detroit.
The guitar was a showstopper. Dealers lined up to place their orders, forcing Gretsch to scramble to start building the flashing white hollowbody to meet demand.
