As a contrast to last month’s megabudget film sessions over at British Grove studios, where I took everything but the kitchen sink (because I had a roadie to help), I’ve just returned from recording a couple of tracks for my friend Andrew Small’s album at his rather splendid home studio. And it was here that I thought I’d experiment with minimal gear due to knowing roughly what kind of style I’d be playing (Scofieldesque jazz-funk) and also that it would be a DI recording rather than an amp.
Andrew is recording a new album ahead of a couple of shows we’re playing at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho, late October. He’s enjoyed a good deal of success as a drummer and musical director for acts such as Kylie Minogue and Il Divo, and, as such, this album is a labor of love for him.
