Upperlands-born Chef To Compete In World Prestigious Competition

A COUNTY Derry-born chef, who has only been cooking for three years, is set to compete this week in the Roux Scholarship, a premier competition for chefs across the UK which ranks among the most prestigious in the world.

Ahead of the regional finals which take place on Thursday (March 8), 24 year-old Ryan Porter, from Upperlands, told The County Derry Post that he fell into a career in cooking quite by ‘accident.’

The former Magherafelt High School student had originally wanted to pursue his interests in Mixed Martial Arts. To fund this, he took up a part-time job in bar work but soon began working in the kitchen.

“I fell in love with the idea of being a chef and it started from there. It was an accident.”
