Police and the Education Authority have urged motorists driving near Derry schools to be more considerate and safe following numerous complaints to the PNSI about the issue.
The matter created some considerable online debate when Derry News asked the public for their opinion.
Judging by the reaction, this is an issue that is affecting thousands of people across the city.
Deborah Harrigan was one of those who responded who even provided a photograph showing cars parked on the pavements outside across Holy Family Primary School blocking access to the paths for pedestrians, pushchairs and wheelchairs.
“Parked right across the footpath on the first week back to school leaving us two choices to get past, either through the mucky grass or the busy road,” she said.
“Every morning while walking the path to school with my child there are cars driving up on to the footpath beside us and behind us just to park right outside the school while there are two car parks less than a minute’s walk from the school; it’s an absolute disgrace.”
Flipper Campbell said that he feared for the safety of those who are parking up and running across a busy road to get their children to school.
“Children are going to be killed outside Lisnagelvin Primary School,” he said.
