From the point of view of most Indians, the situation in Kashmir has steadily deteriorated over the past few months.
The low turnout during the Lok Sabha by-election in April 2017 was a clear indication that the writ of the state does not run large in the valley; it has fuelled concerns that the unrest in Kashmir is morphing into a serious threat to India's integrity. Social media outbursts suggest widespread demoralisation among citizens over the government's failure to adequately address the threat. The clamor for firmer handling of the violence inside Kashmir and along the LoC is becoming louder, but the government appears to remain in stasis.
