Priyanka’s Entry Has Energised The Congress In Uttar Pradesh, Turning What Was Billed As A Big Fight Between The Bjp And The Grand Alliance Into A Triangular Contest
IN THE 2014 LOK SABHA ELECTION, the Congress got 5 per cent or less votes in 38 of the 80 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. In another 14 seats, it polled 10 per cent or less votes. This would suggest that the decision to keep the Congress out won’t significantly impact the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance in the state this time. However, with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s formal entry into politics, the Congress is no longer the also-ran it was five years ago. The contest in India’s most crucial state electorally speaking has truly turned triangular.
Will this triangular fight resulting in the division of votes help the incumbent BJP? In 2014, the three grand alliance partners had together accounted for 42.7 per cent of the vote share in UP while the BJP bagged 42.3 per cent votes, winning 71 seats. In such a close contest, the Congress’s vote share could prove to be the decider.
