STONINGTON—Halibut season begins on May 14, and local fishermen will be out trying to catch the big fish though the season was shortened by two weeks to a month.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources trimmed the season by a week at each end to stay within the federal catch limit and to prevent triggering of accountability measures.
