CPIM (M)'s Acid Test In Tripura
Northeast Today|January 2018

With the victory in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, BJP’s next target is the Left bastion Tripura where for 25 years the CPI (M) led government is in power.

CPIM (M)'s Acid Test In Tripura

First Words

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah, in his address to the media post the victories at the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly polls, has clearly indicated that the party’s next target is Tripura- a state which has stood as the last bastion for the CPI (M). In fact Shah himself, in May, had visited the state during which, apart from holding organisational meeting in order to send the message that BJP cares about the tribal section of people, he also had his food in a tribal house.

Moreover, following its poll success in Assam, the BJP leaders and ministers are regular visitors to Tripura and addressed rallies to try and warm up to voters. They have been able to return the lost confidence among the anti-Left opposition supporters most of them once Congress but later joined the BJP with a hope for a change.

Adding to the confidence of the opposition is the joining of the six Congress defection MLAs who once joined Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool under the stewardship of former opposition leader Sudip Roy Barman but again in August shifted to BJP as they very soon realised that the West Bengal Chief Minister is with her aspiration as the Prime Ministerial candidate at the national arena is gradually inclining towards the CPI(M) and Congress so can be the face against Modi-led BJP at the Centre and of course to protect the minority vote bank in her state.
