The increasing rise in carbon dioxide levels is a global concern that must be tackled with utmost urgency. The toxic gases, termed greenhouse gases (GHGs) due to their heat trapping effect, are the by-products of fossil fuel-based sources of energy generation – be it for electricity, transport or industrial use. The alternative to fossil fuels is renewable energy sources, which have been gaining popularity worldwide. The percentage of non-polluting sources of energy has been steadily increasing in the overall energy generation capacity of the countries around the world. However, these clean sources of energy generation come with the caveat of intermittency – they only operate when there is enough sunlight or when the wind blows with sufficient intensity.
Intermittency is not viable as people cannot light and heat (or cool) their homes only when the sun shines. Businesses and the scientific community have been working with great perseverance to solve this issue to tip the scales towards 100 per cent renewable energy for all. The interim solution is hybrid and energy storage projects, also known as round-the-clock (RTC) energy projects.
Globally, the hybrid and energy storage market is estimated to hit US$40 billion by 2025. And, India seems to be ahead of the curve in this regard.
