The former Prime Minister, widely viewed as a hero in Kyiv, said the Russian President would be “crazy to do so”.
There have been concerns Putin could launch such an attack as his forces are pushed back by a fierce Ukrainian counter-offensive.
But Mr Johnson said the move would be a “total disaster” for Moscow, which would be left completely ostracised.
He said: “There’s a lot of willingness to give Putin the benefit of the doubt. That will go, the minute he does anything like that.”
The ex-PM, who struck up a close friendship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said there would have to be a response of some kind from the West to a tactical nuclear weapon.
