A CRUSHING poll earlier this week suggests the Tories face annihilation at the next election unless they take swift action to win back voters fed up with the current lack of focus on the issues that matter to them. Separate data shows nine out of 10 constituencies want immigration levels reduced and tightened - a message Rishi Sunak must act on sooner rather than later.
The need to pass the Rwanda bill has never been clearer and the heightened tension between Tory factions underlines the door-die nature of the legislation.
It's good Sunak has pinned his colours to the mast, pledging: "I won't let a foreign court stop us from getting flights off and this deterrent working." But the resignation last night of Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson - a leading grassroots voice over the bill's efficacy underlines the difficulties. There's no point passing a bill that falls at the first legal hurdle.
Voters respect strength and determination and this is the PM's chance to prove he is worthy of their vote. He's picked a fight and must now win it. It's no good thinking words alone will convince wavering electors.
