We're All Not Going On A Summer Holiday

Matt Hancock delivered a blow to Britain’s hopeful holidaymakers yesterday by warning summer “was cancelled”.

The Health Secretary insisted “lavish international” getaways are extremely unlikely this year as the coronavirus travel crisis drags on.

His downbeat guidance came at a time when key players within the tourist industry, such as Ryanair, are preparing for take-off again.

Travel agents’ body ABTA said Mr Hancock was risking jobs and livelihoods with “careless talk”.

A spokesman said: “Outbound travel brings huge benefits to the UK – its direct contribution to the economy is £15.9billion.

“We’d ask that ministers be more sensitive to the language they use and avoid speculating about things that go beyond the Government’s own policy announcements.

“Careless talk has the potential to seriously damage consumer confidence, and this will directly affect people’s jobs and livelihoods.”

Yesterday’s exchanges came amid airline criticism of Britain’s plan to quarantine overseas travellers coming into the country.

Asked by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on ITV’s This Morning whether “summer was cancelled”, Mr Hancock replied: “I think that’s likely to be the case.”

He added: “It is unlikely that big, lavish international holidays are going to be possible for this summer. I just think that’s a reality.”
