THE FUTURE OF EUROPEAN FOOTBALL
THE new-look Champions League format will kill off the European Super League once and for all, according to Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al Khelaifi.
UEFA have presented their grand plan to clubs at a crunch meeting of the European Club Association in Vienna, which will use a “Swiss model” from 2024/25.
It means there will be 36 clubs rather than 32, with a guarantee of 10 group games for each club, and up to two places could go to clubs based on their European history and results over the past five years.
Qatari Al Khelaifi, who is chairman of the ECA, made it clear Europe’s top clubs are on board, despite the ongoing legal fight by Juventus, Real Madrid, and Barcelona to resurrect the ill-fated and doomed European Super League.
