US intelligence officials have secretly agreed to arm and train Ukraine troops on how to fight a guerrilla war against Russian forces if they invade.
Senior officers are planning to help Ukraine forces attack advancing Moscow soldiers in rearguard assaults, mounted if they advance across the front line.
High-level meetings took place this week between the CIA and the US's Defence Intelligence Agency as officials thrashed out plans on how to hinder any Russian advance.
Russia is believed to be building up more than 175,000 soldiers behind the 250-mile front line through contested Donetsk and Luhansk in the east.
Moscow-backed separatists and a gradual build-up of regular troops are facing off Ukraine forces in trench fortifications just 330ft apart.
