Protesters battled riot cops in Trafalgar Square as demos across the country turned violent yesterday.

In ugly scenes in London, far-right mobs hurled fireworks, cans and bottles at mounted officers and riot cops.

Violence broke out after hundreds of protesters gathered around the Cenotaph in Whitehall and the boarded-up statue of Sir Winston Churchill in Parliament Square.

Crowds surged towards lines of officers, who hit back with batons. Flag poles and a smoke bomb were thrown towards police before protesters moved to Trafalgar Square where fireworks were hurled.
