The sea was closed. A sewer collapsed, causing its filthy contents to spill into the water and a firework display on the seafront in honour of MP Sir David Amess to be cancelled.
This was no one-off event; large swathes of the south coast are increasingly no-go zones and the Thames is still often polluted because our water system can’t cope with rising levels of rainfall.
In the 19th century they called it the Great Stink. But back then they built sewers to solve it. Now we are facing stink 2.0 and there is a row in government about how to deal with it, with wider implications for how we solve future environmental crises.
