India records world's highest rise in virus cases in a day

75,760 new infections take the tally to over 3.3m; 1,023 more die; recovery rate rises to 76.24% while fatalities decline to 1.83%: Ministry; officials discuss opening air and rail travel from Sept.1

The government continued to highlight the high rate of recoveries from COVID-19 on Thursday, but India has seen the highest single-day rise in any country in the 24 hours since Wednesday morning.

The national count of new infections shot up to 75,760, while 1,023 deaths were reported.

The total number of cases have now crossed 3.3 million, and the death toll has reached 60,472.

There are 7,25,991 active cases. The number of recoveries in 25,23,771, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data. The recovery rate has risen to 76.24 per cent while the fatality rate has further declined to 1.83 per cent, the ministry stresses.

Union government officials were discussing possibilities of opening up air and rail travel from Sept.1, when India enters its Unlock 4 phase.

It is understood that Metro rail services in Delhi and other cities with restart with COVID-19 regulations. Karnataka has already announced resumption of Metro rail services from Sept.1.

The phase 6 of Vande Bharat Mission will commence from Sept. 1.
