A study by two Cork hospitals concluded ambulance services are underutilised by people with acute coronary syndrome as only 27% of patients used them to get to hospital.It expressed concern that most patients with ACS travelled in potentially unsafe conditions either directly to hospital or to their GP. The research, in the latest edition of the Irish Medical Journal, found 56% of patients who suffered heart attacks and conditions like unstable angina presented initially to their GP, while 17% went to the emergency department of a hospital. The study showed 54% of people who saw their GP continued to hospital in their own transport compared to 46% who went by ambulance.The study by Cork University Hospital and the Mercy University Hospital in Cork analysed the details of almost 2,000 patients listed.One of the report&#39;s authors, Dr Shane Ahern of CUH&#39;s Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery said: It is clear there is an underutilisation of ambulance services in patients that experience ACS.
