Athletes can boost their performance with coffee even if they are caffeine regulars, a study found.

An intake roughly equivalent to two cups of Joe taken an hour before exercise improved physical performance by 1.7% on average, regardless of how much the person usually drank.

Previous studies have indicated coffee boosts endurance but whether the benefits extend to those who knock them back regularly was a mystery until now.

Author Dr Neil Clark said: “The relationship between habitual caffeine use and performance is poorly understood.”
