The Irishman, who was one of the princess’s favourite designers during her marriage to Prince Charles, witnessed royal life up close and said he “understands perfectly” why they’d break away.
He also noted the similarities between the treatment of the late princess and Meghan today, saying: “It wasn’t well handled.”
Speaking to Irish Mirror, he added: “I think they are a young couple and I wish them well if they want to have their own lifestyle.
“And go forth and seek. I think sometimes royal living isn’t for everybody and the amount of restrictions required.
“I can understand perfectly where they are coming from and I only wish them well.”
The father of seven said his only wish for the family he once had strong links to, is that they can get their relationships back on track again following the public fallout.
On the similarities to how Meghan has been treated to Diana before her untimely death, he added: “It’s very similar yeah, it wasn’t well handled with her and I think it hasn’t been well handled with Meghan.
