Towns combat vandalism

STONINGTON/DEER ISLE—Warm weather has brought a spate of vandalism to island towns, with graffiti spray-painted on roads, sidewalks and granite walls this past week.

Deer Isle Town Manager Jim Fisher said he’s been in touch with the Maine Department of Transportation about removing a large graffito at the intersection of Route 15 and Main Street in Deer Isle village. The town is taking responsibility for getting rid of graffiti on the Sunshine Road, Fisher said in a phone interview.

Some of the graffiti is pro-Black Lives Matter, some of it is anti, Fisher said.

“Some of it is just high school hijinks,” he said.
